On Tuesday, Patrick Kane agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

The forward, Patrick Kane who turned 35 on November 19, has been recuperating after surgery on June 1 to resurface his hip. The company that represents him, Creative Arts Agency, posted a video on September 27 featuring him working out and skating. The footage showed him practicing full-speed skating, puck handling, and shooting drills on Toronto’s ice while honing his strength, balance, and mobility in the gym.

Hip resurfacing surgery usually requires 4-6 months of recovery time. On June 17, 2022, center Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals underwent the same treatment for his left hip. About six and a half months after surgery, on January 8 of the previous season, he made his comeback to hockey known, but on November 1 he declared he was taking a break due to “my ongoing injury situation.”

Before the deal was made public on Tuesday, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde stated, There are still some obstacles to overcome. “Even if it does happen, I think there’s going to be some time here, a level of patience certainly from us as a coaching staff going forward.”

After last season, which he concluded with the New York Rangers after being acquired in a three-team deal that also included the Arizona Coyotes on February 28, Patrick Kane’s eight-year contract, which he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 9, 2014, expired. In 19 games with New York, he had 12 points (five goals, seven assists), and in 54 games with Chicago, he scored 45 points (16 goals, 29 assists).

From 2017 to 22, Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat was a teammate of Patrick Kane in Chicago.

DeBrincat remarked, “I think he’s been working hard.” I believe he is the only man who has a chance to recover from that surgery. He seems to be a perpetual hockey fan, in my opinion. He’s undoubtedly concerned about improving himself and how he’s going to achieve that on his own during his free time. I believe he has been missing the game a lot, so it’s fantastic to see him so close to a return.

With the Blackhawks, Patrick Kane won the Stanley Cup three times (2010), (2013), and (2015). After leading the NHL with 106 points (46 goals, 60 assists) to win the Art Ross Trophy in 2015–16, he was selected the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In addition, the NHL Players’ Association members selected him as the recipient of the Ted Lindsay Award for Most Outstanding Player that season. In addition, he won the Calder Trophy as the team’s rookie of the year in 2007–08, leading all rookies with 72 points (21 goals, 51 assists).

With 1,225 points (446 goals, 779 assists), Patrick Kane is second in Blackhawks history only to Stan Mikita (1,467). After Mike Modano (1,374), he has the second-most NHL points among players born in the United States with 1,237 (451 goals, 786 assists). In 2017, during the League’s centennial celebration, he was selected as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players.

The Red Wings (11-6-3) are third in the Atlantic Division and have won three games in a row. On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT, MAX), they take on the New York Rangers in their next game.

“I think he’s obviously a guy that the other team’s worried about it and is focused on,” DeBrincat stated. He can move the puck and pull a few players in, so I guess I had to kind of learn how to play with it. He’s not the kind of guy who, in my opinion, might decide to play the first play he sees. He will normally cling to it until something better presents itself, at which point he will move it. His hockey acumen is extraordinary. I enjoyed playing with him.
