Matt Ulrich, 41, passed away on Wednesday after leading the Indianapolis Colts to victory in Super Bowl XLI. The cause of death is yet unknown.

Jim Irsay, the Colts club owner, made the announcement.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Matt Ulrich. Matt was with us only two seasons, but left his mark on many,” Irsay posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Great guy, I hear he was a great dad — and he was a Super Bowl champ. My prayers to his family.”

Ulrich, who was raised in the Chicago region, began playing football in high school. He played football for the Northwestern Wildcats in his hometown and was a standout offensive guard. After winning three Iron Cat titles, he went on to captain the 2004 squad.

Ulrich signed with the Colts after being passed over for the draft by Northwestern in 2005, and he made the team out of training camp. He played offensive guard in ten games.

In 2019, Ulrich was questioned about his feelings after winning his biggest game of the season against the New England Patriots.

He told Montana Sports, “One of the best days outside the births of my four children and my wedding.” “One of the best days of my life was just knowing we punched the ticket to the Super Bowl.”

On February 4, 2007, Ulrich played his last game for an NFL team as the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears 29–17 in the Super Bowl.

Ulrich remarked, “I had to remind myself to take one moment for myself.” “It was good advice I got from someone that if you do win it, take that last moment to look back at the tunnel and just look at the scoreboard, look at the field, and just know you’re at the pinnacle of sports.”

Ulrich served as a chief growth office and partner for Profitable Ideas Exchange in addition to serving as a player advisor for Harvard’s Football Players Health Study before his passing. At the time of his passing, he was also employed as the head coach of Mountain Edge Athletics in Bozeman, Montana.

Ulrich departs leaving behind four sons and a wife.
