Two weeks after making Danelo Cavalcante getaway from a jail in the US state of Pennsylvania, a fugitive was apprehended by a police dog as he attempted to hide in dense underbrush, according to authorities.

After an airplane detected his heat signal during the course of the night, Danelo Cavalcante, 34, was apprehended in a rural location.

After he ran away on August 31, he was found by more than 500 police officers.

For killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her two young children in April 2021, he was given a life sentence last month.

Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro stated Cavalcante was “apprehended with no shots fired” on Wednesday just after 08:00 local time (12:00 GMT).

His praise for law enforcement’s extraordinary work and a tremendous assist from members of the public in bringing Cavalcante to justice.

According to police, a search team consisting of dogs, aircraft, and mounted patrols fanned out across South Coventry Township’s woodlands overnight while it rained and thundered.

A home burglar alarm prompted law officers to approach Cavalcante.

At 1:00, a Drug Enforcement Administration plane detected a heat signal on the ground, but due of the bad weather, the pilot had to take off.

Around 05:00, a tactical team of about twenty officers started to close in on the heat source; four hours later, Cavalcante was identified.

They were able to enter fairly discreetly, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Colonel George Bivens said during the press conference. They were surprising in some way.

Until then, Cavalcante was unaware that he was being surrounded. That did not deter him from making an attempt to flee.

He started to crawl through dense underbrush while carrying his stolen gun.

The tactical team included a US Customs and Border Protection unit from Texas that included at least one dog.

Yoda, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois, subdued Cavalcante as he attempted to flee, inflicting a minor bite wound on him.

He resisted but was violently put into prison, according to Lt. Col. Bivens.

According to officials, Cavalcante suffered a scalp wound” and would be medically assessed before being sent to a detention facility.

In the near future, he will show up in court on a felony escape charge, according to a statement from Philadelphia’s attorney general.

A handcuffed Cavalcante wearing a soiled Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt is shown in local television footage being led to an armored black police van.

Before removing him from the hoodie and putting him inside the car, a sizable group of police officers dressed in camouflage uniforms are seen posing for pictures with their prisoner.

Lt Col Bivens stated that he was not bothered at all by the fact that officers took the photo.

Those people put forth an incredible amount of effort despite extremely difficult circumstances. He assured reporters that they were pleased with their efforts.

The three commissioners of Chester County declared together that Cavalcante’s capture puts an end to the nightmare of the past two weeks.

They said that prison administrators had hired new security contractors and made “some immediate changes to strengthen security in the prison.”

Cavalcante managed to escape Chester County Prison, located about 30 miles (50 km) west of Philadelphia, where he was being held while awaiting transfer to another facility, just a week after being given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. He “crab-walked” between two walls and scaled a razor-wire fence.

He managed to escape using the same strategy Igor Bolte, another prisoner, did in May. The prison’s obvious security mistake and the lone fugitive’s fortnight-long escape from a manhunt that involved officers using night-vision goggles, dogs, drones, and aerial support humiliated the authorities.

In his home country of Brazil, where social media users hailed the end of the quest, Cavalcante’s escape and capture made headlines.

Brando’s sister stated that the arrest brings a lot of relief in an interview with Brazilian news website G1.

Silvia Brando told the newspaper, “We were scared he would seek vengeance against my family. You know what he is capable of, so we were very afraid.

In the central Brazilian state of Tocantins in 2017, Cavalcante is also charged with killing a young acquaintance over an outstanding debt in addition to Brando.
