KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chris Jones, a defensive tackle, concluded his strike on Monday by signing a new one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In a statement, Brett Veach, general manager of the Chiefs, said, Chris is an elite player in this league and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team.” We made it our top priority to keep him in a Chiefs uniform since he has been essential to our success in previous Super Bowls. I want to express my gratitude to Chris and his legal counsel Michael and Jason Katz for their perseverance and determination to see this through. Two things became clear during this process: Chris wanted to be a Chief, and the Katz brothers put forth a lot of effort on his behalf.

When the Chiefs go to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars on Sunday, Jones should be able to participate for the first time. At a charity event last week, Jones declared that he was maintaining his fitness and would be ready to play the day after signing a new contract.

Jones then remarked, I could play right now. I train out twice a day, every day, but in Miami with my regular team during the offseason. I’ll keep working on it.

According to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jones obtained incentives in the new contract that would enable him to earn more than the $19.5 million he was expected to make this season under his old contract.

Jones missed the Chiefs’ 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions in their season opener last week because he was injured, forfeiting his about $1.1 million game check.

Jones opted not to report to training camp in order to pursue a better offer. He had a four-year, $80 million deal with the Chiefs that was set to expire in 2020. By average income, he would have been the seventh best-paid defensive tackle in the NFL under the terms of the contract.
