On Thursday, Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 4-2 in their derby, thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme in extra time. Diego Simeone’s team was awarded a spot in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.

Two weeks after the teams faced off in the Spanish Super Cup semifinals in Saudi Arabia, where Real Madrid prevailed 5-3, the rivals reconnected for a fiery match at the packed Metropolitano that was likewise decided by two extra-time goals, but this time in Atletico’s advantage.

When Morata squandered a clear opportunity from close range in the 82nd minute, Real launched a counterattack. Jude Bellingham’s cross was headed for an equaliser by Joselu, sending the game into extra time.

In the hundredth minute, Griezmann pulled off a brilliant move to take the ball from Vinicius Junior on the halfway line, sprint up the right channel and score into the box. With a neat finish in the 119th minute, Riquelme sealed the victory.

The coach of Madrid, Diego Simeone, commented, “It was an amazing goal, probably one of his best.” We had a great game, and the guys gave it their all against a very excellent opponent. The match was fantastic.

Following the conclusion of regulation, Simeone and Vinícius got into a heated argument. The celebration Vinícius had following Joselu’s goal seemed to have enraged the coach. Apparently, Vinícius also got into a fight at the Metropolitano with one of the ball boys.
